Housekeeping

Housekeeping takes many shapes and forms depending upon your household technology, family, type of home you have and culture you live in.  Our trip earlier this year to Uganda was, in some ways, a brief glimpse into history.   Cooking meals over fires, no electricity (or unreliable electricity), handwashing clothes, basic chores taking hours to complete, sometimes the whole day, but always women working with their own hands, together in community, for their homes and their families.  And an altogether slower pace of life.

For our family here in our home, we have reliable electricity, a washing maching, a dryer, and many kitchen mod cons - now a dishwasher too (which I will confess to loving dearly already!).  The technology and electricity available to us means that most of the chores can be completed individually - not requiring multiple hands to get the job done.  But it does not change the fact that housekeeping is a valuable work, a necessary work to the happiness and healthiness of our families.  Not to mention the smooth running of our lives.

Do you ever get distracted from your housekeeping duties?  I do ...... lets see.  A good book that I simply cannot put down.  A hot topic I am researching for my own edification.  Piano playing and practise.  Nature Rambles.  Excursions to our local seaside rockpools.  Trips to the library and art gallery.  Socialisation opportunities with our homeschooling friends.  Blogging.  Internet.  Photographing.  Emailing.  Telephone calls.  Church activities.  A good book that I simply cannot put down (oh, did I mention that already?).  Have I missed anything?  I am sure you could add some of your own.

What do you do to undistract yourself once the housework begins to noticably pile up?

Over the next few weeks I will be revisiting my collection of inspiring home making articles and books and blog posts that are just the thing to encourage housekeeping inspiration to return.  Then I'll trim things back a bit.  Trim off those extra outings and activities.  Trim back my computer and internet time.  And then I'll begin my day with housekeeping.  We'll put on some livelyn happy music, and all us girls will roll up our sleeves and work and sing together till we have some order.  Then we shall  reward ourselves with reading time, or beach time, or visiting time, or perhaps an extra yummy lunch.

My little blog home will not be ignored either.  I'll be doing some housekeeping here as well.  So, if Marigold Cottage disappears from the net for a short while, please do not forget me.  Do not change your links.  I will be back, maybe one month, perhaps two.  As soon as my house is in order.

Love to you, all my friends.  Happy Homemaking.  Happy Homeschooling.  xo

Me distracted? Never!

Oh hang on, that's not quite true. Sometimes I must distract myself from the computer so that I can tend to the housework and meals.

All the best with your housekeeping Amy :)

Missed this some weeks ago but the title is enough to make me quiver :-( I am VERY easily distracted from housekeeping to the point I have to confess to negligence at times :-(
When my girls were teens and my boys just in short pants we would play songs like Bob the Builder for that upbeat motivation! Must give that a try! My major distraction at the moment is the sheer number of small people in the house. Can hardly get the dishes done and keep up with the washing. This season too, will pass.
Hope to see you back soon. In fact saw your comment somewhere today so I know you are still around :-)
