Do you play in the rain?

A week of rain patches amidst white clouds and sunshine.  And now we are onto our third day of solid rain.  Heavy, grey skies, washing that won't dry, everyone now on mildew watch.  The chickens are shut up in their pen looking wet and bedraggled, complete with their own new water feature that is quickly growing into their own little chicken flood.  Our menfolk now are watching the growing puddles, and digging out channels to release some of the water backing up around the buildings.  Up on the roof, cleaning out gutters so that the water does not back up on the roof and begin to leak in the house.  Our neighbours creek yesterday was brimming with rainwater washing down from the surrounding hills and flowing onto the road, causing a bit of fun for the passing traffic.  Our friendly weather man tells us that this weather will continue until Monday next week.  This is the kind of weather we like to stay home for, if we have a choice.

But after a week of minimal sunshine, we start to feel a bit grey on our insides.  The rain that initially was so refreshing, and a welcome change from our hot, summer days, has now begun to feel a bit oppressive.  Do you feel the clouds weighing down on you?  Do those same clouds also affect your children?

How do you make those clouds lighter and brighter?

Generally we start to feel these effects on the third or fourth day of heavy rain.  We make our days bright by turning on a few more lights in the living room where we are busy working and playing.  We play our Wii - playing tennis or soccer, or wakeboarding on the Wii together helps us forget the clouds for a while.  We play board games and I might dig out a puzzle.  We'll put on some lively music and dance, or do some housework with it.  We enjoy the moments to have a hot chocolate or a coffee and snuggle down for some serious rainy day reading.  And then we play in the rain.

Yes, we play in the rain.

Just because it is raining and we need to keep a look out for rainy-day problems, doesn't mean we can't also enjoy the rain as its own little adventure.  We put up our umbrellas and go for a walk.  We swing on our tyre swing, jump on the trampoline, climb trees.  And most importantly - we jump in the puddles.

Afterwards, when we are cold, and drenched, we straggle in for a hot shower, dry clothes and something yummy to eat - and perhaps another cup of hot chocolate or coffee!

How do you play in the rain?

We do most of those rainy day activities. I know what you mean about starting to feel grey on the inside. I think living in a place with so much sunshine, we just can't handle the dullness. I often wonder how I would cope in a cold wet climate.
My little grandsons are enjoying the "mud play". I hope you are not in an area where there is flooding?

I'm starting to feel grey after days and days of raining weather at the moment.

My boys play in the rain, in fact...I encourage it. Otherwise they'd have no way of using up all that boy energy!!

PS - Great photos. To discourage people from stealing them from your blog, why don't you put a watermark on it? I used photoshop for mine.

As soon as it rains, my girls all turn to look at me and ask hopefully, 'It's raining.....can we go out?' They are ready to drop everything for some rainy, puddly, muddy play. Even my 16 year old :).

We are not in any serious flooding area. We have had a couple of drainage problems here and on Tuesday our neighbours creek flooded the road in the afternoon, so we were keeping our eye on that, but it all got away fairly quickly.
